Intacs Corneal Rings

What Is Keratoconus?

Patients suffering from keratoconus may benefit from Intacs® corneal rings.

Intacs are acrylic arc segments that are FDA-approved for placement into a weakened cornea. Specifically designed to treat keratoconus, they can provide support to the cornea.

The shape of the cornea is normally round, like a basketball, or, in the case of astigmatism, shaped like a football. In keratoconus, the cornea becomes cone-shaped and thinner, resulting in distorted vision. This can affect daily activities such as driving, reading, and favorite hobbies.

How Intacs Work

A femtosecond laser is used to create a tunnel in the cornea. Next, the Intacs corneal ring is inserted into the tunnel where the cornea is bulging outward. It acts as a brace to hold the cornea in. The Intacs can stay in the cornea for years or can be removed at a later date if  indicated. It is not taken out by a patient and there are no long-term drops needed when it is in the eye.

The surgeons at Valley Eye Associates offer Intacs as an option for keratoconus patients and will recommend them to patients who are good candidates.
