What Is Keratoconus?
Patients suffering from keratoconus may benefit from CTAK (Corneal Tissue Addition Keratoplasty). CTAK is specifically designed to treat keratoconus, they can provide support to the cornea.
The shape of the cornea is normally round, like a basketball, or, in the case of astigmatism, shaped like a football. In keratoconus, the cornea becomes cone-shaped and thinner, resulting in distorted vision. This can affect daily activities such as driving, reading, and favorite hobbies.
What is CTAK?
Corneal Tissue Addition Keratoplasty (CTAK) is an innovative, minimally invasive surgical procedure for treating keratoconus by adding customized, irradiated donor corneal tissue to reshape the cornea. It is reversible, and carries a lower risk of rejection because the donor tissue is processed to remove active cells. Using CorneaGen’s Custom Tissue Inlays, CTAK provides patient-ready, gamma-irradiated sterile, non‑immunogenic donated corneal tissue inlays that are laser-cut and customized to patients’ specific severity and cone location.
The surgeons at Valley Eye Associates offer CTAK as an option for keratoconus patients and will recommend them to patients who are good candidates.
